Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Relieved About New Title Bestowed by King Charles
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is reportedly relieved and delighted about her new title bestowed upon her by King Charles.
Last Friday, Sophie and her husband, Prince Edward, were honored with the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, placing Sophie on the same rank as Meghan.
According to a close friend of the couple, Sophie is relieved that she no longer has to curtsy to a family member who not only abandoned their royal duties but also spent the past three years criticizing the institution that Sophie worked tirelessly to support.
It is worth noting that Royal Highnesses generally do not bow or curtsy to other Royal Highnesses, except for His Majesty.
The Queen had promised Edward and Sophie that they would be granted these titles before her passing, and Charles has now fulfilled her final wishes on Edward's 59th birthday.
Previously, the title was held by Edward's late father, Prince Philip.
As a result of this promotion, Edward and Sophie's 15-year-old son, James, will assume the title of Earl of Wessex.
However, their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, will not experience any change in her title.
The new Duchess of Edinburgh has been actively involved in more official royal engagements in 2022 than both the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Queen Consort, Camilla.
In fact, she has participated in a total of 158 engagements.
Sophie has devoted 21 years of her life to serving the royal family since marrying Prince Edward in 1999.
In a 2021 interview with The Telegraph, Sophie recounted the day after her engagement to Edward when Prince Philip expressed his desire for them to inherit the title.
She recalled, “We sat there slightly stunned.
He literally came straight in and said, ‘Right.
I'd like it very much if you would consider that.'”
For Edward, this moment was bittersweet, as he knew that the title could only be passed on to him after both his parents had passed away.
Edward was the only one of Philip's children whose birth he was present for, and it is said that he was Philip's favorite son.
Sophie also had a close relationship with Philip, which brought relief to the Queen.
Royal author Ingrid Seward once mentioned in an interview with the Sunday Times that Sophie got along very well with Philip.
The Queen found this to be a great relief, as female members of the royal family knew how to handle Philip.
Sophie had the ability to make him laugh and was not intimidated by his directness.
She stood her ground and did not allow him to bully her.
This strong bond between Sophie and Philip further solidified her position within the royal family.
The Duchess is highly regarded by the rest of the firm and has been described as a second daughter to Queen Elizabeth.
