Sophie, Countess of Wessex Expected to Become Duchess of Edinburgh

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is anticipated to receive the title of Duchess of Edinburgh.

The 57-year-old, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest son, had a close bond with her late mother-in-law and even referred to her as “Mama.”

Following the Queen's passing, the Countess has been seen attending several memorial services for the monarch, appearing somber and tearful.

It is now speculated that Edward, 58, may inherit his late father Prince Philip's former title of Duke of Edinburgh, resulting in Sophie becoming a duchess.

Initially, the title of Duke of Edinburgh was passed down to Charles, who has since become King.

However, the decision regarding the inheritance of the title now rests with the new King, as reported by a source.

Prince Philip had expressed his desire for Edward to inherit the title when the time came, and III has agreed to honor this wish.

Currently, Edward is the only one of the Queen's sons without a dukedom.

While it is believed that Charles will fulfill his promise to his late father, Edward has previously expressed doubts, stating, “Of course it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes King, whether he'll do that, so we'll wait and see.

So yes, it will be quite a challenge taking that on.”

Edward and Sophie have been observed attending several of the Queen's memorial services, during which Sophie was seen offering support to her sister-in-law, Princess Annette.

One touching moment occurred as the family watched the Queen's coffin being carried into the Palace of Hollerood House in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The Queen's children and their spouses stood in solemn silence as soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland transported the coffin to the Palace's throne room.

Subsequently, the Queen's coffin was brought to Buckingham Palace, where several senior royals awaited her arrival.

In addition to Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, III, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Queen Consort Camilla, Princess Anne, Sir Tim Lawrence, , Edomopeli Motsi, , Jack Brooksbank, Zara Phillips, and Mike Tindall were present at the Palace.

Following the death of II, numerous members of the royal family have received new titles.

Prince Charles has ascended to the throne as King Charles III, while his wife, Camilla, now holds the title of Queen Consort.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, with the possibility of becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales in the future.

Even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children, three-year-old and one-year-old , have been bestowed with the titles of Prince and Princess due to their grandfather's ascent to the throne.

However, Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are unlikely to acquire any additional titles.

They stepped back from their roles as senior members of the royal family in early 2020 and no longer use their HRH designations.

Nevertheless, there remains a possibility that King Charles may revoke the newfound titles from his grandchildren.

During an interview with last year, Meghan revealed that discussions within the royal family had taken place regarding changing the rules to prevent from obtaining the princely title.

She also disclosed that while she was pregnant with Archie, the family decided not to grant him the HRH and Prince titles, citing concerns over the potential darkness of the baby's skin.

It is also conceivable that Harry and Meghan may choose not to bestow the new titles upon Archie and .

Other members of the royal family, such as Princess Anne and Prince Edward, have previously made the decision not to grant titles to their own children.
