Royal Rebranding: George, Charlotte, and Louis Embrace New School Names
In a significant shift marking their royal identities, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have officially adopted new surnames as they begin the school year at Lambrook School in Berkshire.
This change comes as the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales transition into their respective grades: George in Year 7, Charlotte in Year 5, and Louis in Year 2.
Returning to school after their summer break in September 2022, the young royals will now be known as George Wales, Charlotte Wales, and Louis Wales.
This decision reflects their parents' recent elevation to the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
It's a poignant reminder of their lineage, blending tradition with the realities of modern life.
Interestingly, despite their royal heritage, the siblings will not be addressed by their royal titles while at school.
Instead, their new names pay homage to their Welsh roots, a practice reminiscent of their father, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, who adopted the surname Wales during their school years.
This choice underscores a desire for normalcy amid their royal upbringing.
Prior to this transition, the children were known as George Cambridge, Charlotte Cambridge, and Louis Cambridge, reflecting the titles their parents held as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The shift from Cambridge to Wales signifies a new chapter in their lives, aligning their identities more closely with their current royal status.
It's worth noting that the use of surnames among royals is not as straightforward as it might seem.
Traditionally, members of the royal family are not commonly referred to by their last names.
While they could technically use Mountbatten-Windsor, the name associated with the royal family, most prefer to be identified by their first names and titles.
Interestingly, male-line descendants of Queen Elizabeth II, who do not hold royal titles, are entitled to the Mountbatten-Windsor surname.
This was established in a 1960 declaration by the late queen herself.
