Queen Margaret II of Denmark Abdicates, Crown Princess Mary to Take Over

In a surprising turn of events, Queen Margaret II of Denmark has announced her decision to step down as monarch on New Year's Eve.

After a reign of 52 years, she will pass the torch to her son, Crown Prince Frederik, and his wife, Crown Princess Mary, on January 14th.

This historic moment marks the ascension of the first Australian-born Queen of Denmark, solidifying her place in history.

While this news may have royal enthusiasts buzzing, it's safe to say that won't be joining the ranks anytime soon, much to the disappointment of her fervent supporters.

The differences between Crown Princess Mary and are apparent, not only in their backgrounds but also in their paths to royalty.

When Mary married Frederik in 2004, the Danish parliament enacted a law named after her, granting any foreign royal spouse Danish citizenship.

However, this meant that Mary had to renounce her Australian and British citizenships upon marriage.

On the other hand, Meghan Markle retained her American citizenship after tying the knot with , avoiding the need for a special law.

Another notable distinction is the language barrier.

Crown Princess Mary dedicated around 18 months to learning Danish when she became engaged to Frederik.

Despite her children joking that she speaks the language with an Australian accent, she is undoubtedly fluent.

In contrast, Meghan Markle did not face the challenge of learning a new language when she married into the royal family.

While she possesses knowledge of French and Spanish, it remains unclear if she can read or write in these languages.

Mary's journey into Danish royalty came with its fair share of sacrifices.

Alongside relinquishing her Australian citizenship, she had to adapt to a new religion, language, and familiarize herself with Danish history and culture.

All the while, she gracefully handled the transition from an ordinary person to a globally recognized figure.

Unlike Mary, Meghan Markle has been more vocal about her experiences as a royal, even going so far as to write a book and grant interviews that have been seen as damaging to the British royal family.

Since stepping down as a senior royal in 2020, Meghan Markle has remained in the public eye by frequently criticizing the firm and the British press.

Despite her claims of struggling with media attention, it is worth noting that she had prior experience with fame and maintained friendships with British journalists.

In contrast, Mary had no prior exposure to the press before becoming a royal.

Royal expert Phil Dampier expressed his belief that Mary would view Meghan's actions with horror.

He stated that Mary is dedicated to supporting Queen Margaret and may feel that Harry and Meghan have let down .

Dampier further emphasized that if Mary had followed in Meghan's footsteps, it would have been akin to luring Frederick away from his family and destiny, which would have been highly frowned upon.

As the spotlight continues to shine on the Danish royal family, all eyes are now on Catherine, the Princess of Wales, who is set to make a high-profile appearance in Denmark.

While the event promises a new dress and tiara for Catherine, it seems unlikely that Harry and Meghan will receive an invitation to join the festivities.
