Queen Elizabeth II’s Dressmaker Reveals Hilarious Prank on Monarch
In a surprising revelation, Angela Kelly, the dressmaker and confidante of Queen Elizabeth II, has unveiled a hilarious prank she played on the Queen during her royal tour in Australia back in 2006.
Kelly, who has been a long-time aide to the monarch, recounted the incident in her book, “The Other Side of the Coin, The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe,” which was authorized by Queen Elizabeth herself.
During their visit to Sydney, the Queen expressed her excitement about seeing the kookaburra bird, which is native to Australia and New Guinea.
Taking advantage of this, Kelly found a soft toy version of the bird at a market while the Queen was attending an engagement.
She then devised a plan to play a prank on Her Majesty.
Upon the Queen's return, Kelly informed her about a “funny-looking grey bird” on her balcony.
The Queen rushed to see it and exclaimed, “Oh, it's a kookaburra!”
Unbeknownst to the Queen, Kelly had placed the toy bird in a little cage on the balcony.
When Kelly attempted to open the cage doors, the Queen anxiously stopped her, fearing the bird would fly away.
At this point, Kelly revealed that the bird was actually dead, leading to a shocked reaction from the Queen.
With a mischievous grin, Kelly exclaimed, “April Fool!”
The Queen responded with humor, saying, “You're sacked.”
Prince Philip, known for his sense of humor, was also present during the incident and found it amusing.
Kelly shared that she couldn't stop laughing as the Queen turned to Prince Philip and exclaimed, “Do you know what she's just done to me?
Angela has had me, and I just couldn't stop giggling.”
Angela Kelly's journey to becoming the Queen's dressmaker began unexpectedly.
Before joining the Royal Family, she worked as a housekeeper for the British Ambassador in Germany.
During an official visit to Germany by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, they met Kelly by chance.
The Queen must have been impressed because the following year, Kelly was offered a position as a dresser for the Queen.
She eventually rose to the role of senior dresser and later became the Queen's personal assistant.
Kelly's background is humble, having grown up in Liverpool with parents who worked as a crane driver and a nurse.
Despite lacking formal training in fashion, her ambition and talent propelled her to the top of her profession.
She has designed some of the Queen's most iconic looks, including the pale yellow ensemble worn by the Queen at Prince William and Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding in 2011.
Kelly's designs were also featured during the Queen's historic Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.
In addition to her work with the Queen, Kelly started her own fashion label called Kelly and Poredom.
She collaborates with dressmaker Alison Poredom and their team to bring their designs to life.
The success of their label stemmed from designing pieces that the Queen liked, leading to further opportunities.
Kelly's close relationship with the Queen is evident in their interactions.
She sees the Queen every day, accompanies her on trips abroad, and even lives on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
While maintaining respect and awe for the Queen, Kelly describes their relationship as surprisingly normal.
They discuss clothes, makeup, and jewelry, often asking each other if a particular piece would complement an outfit.
As an essential member of the Queen's inner circle, Angela Kelly has not only become a trusted confidante but also a friend.
She remains grateful for the opportunity to work closely with the Queen and cherishes their bond.
With her unique position, Kelly has undoubtedly added a touch of humor and joy to the life of Queen Elizabeth II.
