Princess Charlotte of Wales May Be Given the Title of Duchess of Edinburgh
The potential change in title for Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only daughter of the prince and princess of Wales, has sparked speculation.
Currently styled as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Wales, the seven-year-old princess could be bestowed with another title in the near future.
Instead of making Prince Edward the Duke of Edinburgh, it is rumored that His Majesty may choose to make Princess Charlotte the Duchess of Edinburgh.
This senior title would serve as a fitting tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who previously held the title when she married Prince Philip.
Prior to ascending the throne on June 2, 1953, the late Queen was styled as Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth, the Duchess of Edinburgh.
By granting Princess Charlotte this prestigious title, it would honor the Queen's legacy.
At present, Princess Charlotte is third in line to the throne, following her older brother Prince George and their father Prince William.
Notably, Princess Charlotte became the first female royal to benefit from the change in succession law, which ensured that girls would not be overtaken by any future younger brothers.
These updated succession laws were implemented ahead of Prince George's birth in 2013.
Discussions regarding the potential title change are currently underway.
According to sources close to the royal family, there is a strong preference for Princess Charlotte to receive the title of Duchess of Edinburgh.
The Mail on Sunday reported that “it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such a corresponding title because it's not beyond the realms of possibility that she will exceed the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children.”
