Princess Charlotte Makes History as First Female Royal to Retain Succession Rank
Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, has made history by becoming the first female royal to retain her place in the line of succession.
This significant change came about after the birth of her younger brother, Prince Louis, in April 2018.
In a groundbreaking move, the UK succession laws were updated prior to the birth of Prince George in 2013.
These changes ensured that a first-born daughter of Prince William and Kate would take precedence over any younger brothers.
The decision was unanimously approved at the Commonwealth Summit in Australia in 2011, effectively altering a 300-year-old rule.
Under the previous law, the heir to the throne would always be the first-born son, with daughters only inheriting the title when there were no sons.
However, with the new legislation, Princess Charlotte was able to maintain her position as 4th in line to the throne, while Prince Louis now stands at 5th.
It is worth noting that this change only applies to those born after October 28th, 2011.
Consequently, other female royals such as Princess Anne and Lady Louise Windsor did not benefit from this alteration.
Princess Anne, who recently celebrated her 72nd birthday, currently holds the 16th position in the line of succession, behind her two younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
Lady Louise Windsor, the only daughter of Prince Edward, faced a similar situation.
Born in November 2003, she was overtaken in the line of succession by her younger brother, James Viscount Severn, who was born in December 2007.
Had the new act been implemented in the 1950s, Princess Anne's children, Peter and Zara, who do not hold HRH titles, would have been closer to the throne than Prince Andrew's two daughters.
According to expert Marlene Koeing, Princess Charlotte will never be displaced in the line of succession due to her gender.
However, it is important to note that the gender equal line of succession does not apply to Princess Anne.
The question now arises: Will Princess Charlotte eventually surpass Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the line of succession?
Is there a chance for a little bit of Diana to make an appearance in the royal succession?
