Princess Anne Raises Concerns Over Slimming Down Monarchy
Princess Anne has subtly addressed the idea of a slimmed-down monarchy in a recent interview, which many believe to be a reference to Prince Harry and Meghan.
In recent years, the Royal Family has focused on streamlining its operations, prioritizing those in line for succession.
While King Charles himself supports this idea, Princess Anne expressed reservations during an interview with Canadian public broadcaster CBC.
She stated that it doesn't sound like a good idea, emphasizing that the suggestion was made when there were more individuals involved.
CBC Chief Correspondent Adrienne Arsenault found it difficult to imagine how the 70-year-old princess could take on additional responsibilities.
She responded, “Well, I think the slimmed-down monarchy was said in a day when there were a few more people around and to make that seem like a justifiable comment.”
This comment is believed to allude to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step back as working royals, Prince Andrew's withdrawal from public life, and the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
When asked about the changing world, Princess Anne acknowledged that it does change, but she questioned the feasibility of the slimmed-down monarchy.
She stated, “It doesn't sound like a good idea from where I'm standing.
I have to say I'm not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”
Although she acknowledged the need for discussions about relevance, she emphasized the long-term stability provided by the monarchy and the constitution.
Princess Anne also noted that these discussions are not ones she would personally engage in.
Addressing recent polls indicating a decline in public support for the monarchy, Princess Anne expressed that the royal family does not necessarily need to address it directly.
She explained, “Well, we don't in many respects need to deal with it, not least of all because it is the monarch that is the key to this and the constitution that underpins the monarchy.”
She emphasized the family's role in supporting the monarch and their contribution to conveying continuity, service, and understanding of how people want to live their lives.
In discussing her brother's future as king, Princess Anne expressed confidence in his commitment to service.
She stated, “You know what you're getting because he's been practicing for quite a bit, and I don't think he'll change.
He is committed to his own level of service.
That will remain true.”
When asked about her lack of concern for the health and longevity of the monarchy, Princess Anne responded, “I think you're putting words into my mouth, as they say.”
She highlighted the genuine benefits of the constitutional monarchy arrangement and its long-term value.
She concluded by affirming that the monarchy stands for a commitment to the future.
