Prince William Responds to Criticism Over Support for England’s Football Team
In a visit to Senedd in Cardiff on Wednesday, November 16th, Prince William addressed the severe criticism he faced for supporting England's football team as Prince of Wales.
During a lighthearted conversation with Linwid Ellen Jones during a tour of Siambra, the future King confronted the issue head-on.
This engagement followed Prince William's meeting with the England football squad, where he presented them with their World Cup shirts as part of a special send-off before the upcoming tournament in Qatar.
Welsh actor Michael Sheen, known for his outspoken anti-Brexit stance, ignited a war of words with the Prince.
Sheen criticized Prince William for distributing shirts to England's World Cup squad while holding the title of Prince of Wales, despite previously suggesting that William should not inherit his father's old title.
Sheen deemed the Prince's visit to the team's training facility and the presentation of the shirts entirely inappropriate.
He had previously expressed disapproval of King Charles' visit to Wales during the Queen's Mourning in September.
In a video shared by the English Football Association, Prince William addressed the World Cup squad, expressing his support for them.
However, Sheen took to Twitter to express his discontent, arguing that while Prince William could support any team he likes as President of the Football Association, doing so while holding the title of Prince of Wales was inappropriate.
Many supporters echoed Sheen's sentiments, highlighting the objectionable nature of the title and calling for its abolition.
On the other hand, some defended Prince William's right to support England.
They argued that his role as President of the English FA warranted his allegiance towards the team, irrespective of his title as Prince of Wales.
In response to Sheen's criticism, Prince William asserted that he would be supporting both England and Wales.
He emphasized his long-standing support for the English football team but also expressed his allegiance to Welsh rugby.
The Prince acknowledged the need to navigate his affiliations carefully, stating that dropping support for England would not be appropriate for the sport.
During his visit to Cardiff, Prince William toured the Senedd building and the debating chamber, led by Elin Jones MS, the presiding officer.
He also engaged with representatives from various political parties, including Welsh Labour, the Welsh Conservatives, Plaid Cymru, and the Welsh Liberal Democrats, in order to gain insights into the concerns of the Welsh people.
As part of his efforts to better understand the nation, the Prince also visited the Welsh Youth Parliament to hear directly from the younger generation about their priorities.
Prince William's visit to Wales signifies his commitment to strengthening his ties with the country.
Prior to being named Prince of Wales, he had a phone conversation with Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Welsh people.
Kensington Palace released a statement indicating that the Prince and Princess of Wales intend to deepen their relationship with communities across Wales.
They aim to support the aspirations of the Welsh people and shed light on both the challenges and opportunities they face.
The couple looks forward to celebrating Wales' rich history and traditions while embracing a promising future.
