Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Decision to Retain Royal Titles Despite Stepping Back: A Closer Look
In a recent interview with Anderson Cooper, Prince Harry addressed the lingering question of why he and Meghan continue to use their royal titles despite their decision to step back from their duties and start a new life in California.
The titles bestowed upon them by Queen Elizabeth after their wedding in May 2018 have been a subject of discussion within the royal family, with talks of potentially stripping them of their status as the Duke and Duchess.
Since their departure from royal life, the couple has been vocal about their experiences within the institution.
From sharing explosive revelations in an interview with Oprah Winfrey to the release of the Netflix docuseries “Harry's memoir, Spare,” these public disclosures have raised questions as to why the royal family has not taken more drastic measures of their own.
During his promotional tour for “Spare,” Harry faced direct questions about these issues.
When asked why they chose to retain their titles, Harry responded by questioning, “And what difference would that make?”
Anderson Cooper pressed further, seeking clarification on the couple's decision.
Harry defended their approach, stating, “Every single time I've tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leaks.”
Despite the strained relationship between Prince Harry and the rest of the royal family, a recent warm phone call between Harry and his father, Prince Charles, has fueled speculation about a possible reconciliation.
Sources suggest that Harry and Meghan would not decline an invitation to spend Christmas with the royal family, although it remains uncertain whether Prince William would extend such an invitation.
If the Sussexes aren't invited, rumors circulate that William and Kate may choose to spend Christmas with the Middletons instead.
Former royal butler, Paul Burrell, representing Slingo, expressed skepticism about the possibility of a reunion.
He highlighted the prevailing negative sentiment within the royal family towards Harry and Meghan, stating, “There is a very bad feeling in the royal family about Harry and Meghan, that if they let them back into the fold, they'll be betrayed again.”
Burrell emphasized the family's perception of Harry profiting from his royal status, adding, “They see it as airing dirty laundry in public and telling tales when they know all too well that they shouldn't do that.
Once you've done it, you're out, and I think Harry has to understand that.”
As the holiday season approaches, the question of a Sandringham reunion lingers, with familial tensions casting doubt on a swift resolution.
The possibility of a Christmas gathering remains uncertain, and the specter of strained relationships continues to loom over the royal family.
