Meghan Markle’s Mandela Comparison Draws Mockery and Criticism
In a recent interview with The Cut magazine, Meghan Markle compared herself to Nelson Mandela, a move that has been met with ridicule and disapproval.
During the interview, the former Suits actress claimed that a cast member of The Lion King informed her that South Africans had celebrated her marriage to Prince Harry in 2019, much like they did when Mandela was released from prison.
However, Today host Karl Stefanovic wasted no time in mocking Markle's claims, expressing incredulity while speaking with Nine's London correspondent Tracey Voe.
Stefanovic, known for his criticism of Meghan, couldn't help but scoff at her comparison to Mandela.
His co-host Alison Langdon chimed in, labeling the comment as “tone deaf.”
In an attempt to appear compassionate, Stefanovic jokingly stated, “I think Meghan is probably a little misunderstood, don't you reckon?”
This prompted Langdon, who has made her distaste for the Sussexes evident, to sarcastically respond, “Oh, you're changing your tune, are you Karl?
Yeah, I think it's time to support her, especially after the Mandela comments.”
Stefanovic burst into laughter, remarking, “Anyone who compares themselves to Mandela, I think, is fair enough.”
Not only did Stefanovic and Langdon mock Markle's statements, but Piers Morgan also joined in, slamming her in response to the interview.
Morgan referred to her comments as “revoltingly self-aggrandising, disingenuous, and hypocritical royal bashing.”
He particularly took issue with the Mandela anecdote, questioning Markle's audacity in using her title to criticize the institution that bestowed it upon her.
The backlash extended beyond the media, with Americans branding Markle's remarks as sickening and accusing her of being out of touch with reality.
They also criticized her for continuing to use her Duchess of Sussex title despite her decision to step down as a working royal.
Archbishop Lucy Burge from Boston questioned Markle's motives, asking why she still clings to a title she seemingly despises.
One person expressed frustration, saying, “What has Meghan Markle been doing since she left the royal family?
Every time she opens her mouth, it's to badmouth them all and lie.
It was so bad she's now comparing herself to Nelson Mandela.”
Markle also faced backlash for claiming that Prince Harry told her, “I lost my dad,” following his public fallout with Prince Charles over their departure from the royal family.
Royal experts previously suggested that Harry had reestablished contact with his father, but his relationship with his brother, Prince William, remained strained after their Oprah interview.
One person accused Markle of causing significant damage to Prince Charles, stating, “Meghan Markle has infamously rejected and demonized her own dad, Tom.
In her last vanity PR interview, she says Prince Harry told her, ‘I lost my dad too.'
That is huge.
It will cause enormous damage to Prince Charles, a king in waiting, and she knows it.”
Furthermore, Markle's claims about the press attempting to photograph her while dropping off Archie at school were met with skepticism.
Royal reporter Richard Palmer dismissed her statements, calling her a “fantasist” for believing such incidents would be a daily occurrence in the UK, where strict rules govern the treatment of children and education.
Columnist Dan Wooten added, “The lies in this interview are extraordinary.
Meghan claims there would be a royal press pen with 40 photographers each time she took Archie to school.
Rubbish.
William and Kate drop their kids off at school most days, sight unseen.”
As Meghan Markle continues to make controversial statements and comparisons, her credibility and intentions are increasingly questioned.
Her recent interview has only served to deepen the divide between her and the royal family, leaving many wondering what her true motivations are and whether she will ever find peace outside the institution she so often criticizes.
