Meghan Markle’s Attendance at King Charles III’s Coronation Uncertain, Expert Reveals Crown Controversies
Meghan Markle, 41, has been invited to participate in King Charles III's coronation, but it remains unconfirmed whether the Duchess of Sussex will attend.
Style expert Rosie Hart, who runs The Royal Wardrobe TikTok channel, shared some interesting insights with her followers.
She revealed that Meghan will not have the opportunity to wear a crown, or technically, a coronet, at the coronation.
These coronets, which are smaller versions of crowns, are worn by members of the royal family and titled nobility, such as dukes and duchesses.
The design of the coronet varies depending on rank and relationship to the monarch.
William and Kate, as the son and daughter-in-law of the monarch, will be able to wear a special coronet featuring crosses and fleur-de-lis.
However, due to recent controversies and rifts, it seems that Harry and Meghan will not have the same privilege.
As the Prince of Wales, William will wear his father's old coronet.
When Prince William eventually becomes King of England, Kate will have the honor of wearing a more magnificent crown during a ceremony where she will be crowned Queen Consort.
The royal family's official website confirms this information.
According to The Sun, it is likely that Kate will wear the Queen Mother's impressive crown.
This crown, currently on display at the Tower of London's Crown Jewels exhibition, was made in 1937 by Gerrard for the Queen Mother.
It is adorned with 2,800 diamonds, with the centerpiece being the gigantic Koh-i-Noor diamond weighing 105 carats.
This diamond was gifted to Queen Victoria in 1849 and has been set in several other crowns throughout history.
The Queen Mother famously wore this crown during her joint coronation with King George VI and her daughter Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953.
It was also placed on top of her casket during her funeral procession in 2002.
The Koh-i-Noor diamond has a controversial history and is part of a long-standing dispute between India and Britain.
The Indian government has requested its return, but according to the Royal Collection Trust's website, it was given to Queen Victoria as a gesture of gratitude for British support during the Crimean War.
Despite the controversies surrounding the diamond, it remains a significant piece within the royal collection.
Before Kate has the opportunity to wear the crown at William's eventual coronation, Queen Camilla, William's stepmother-in-law, will most likely be the first to wear it during King Charles' coronation on May 6, 2023.
Given the controversies surrounding the crown, the Royal Family may choose to select a different piece with a less contentious history.
