Meghan Markle Faces Defamation Lawsuit from Half-Sister Samantha

In a legal battle set to take place in November 2024, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is preparing to defend herself against a defamation lawsuit brought forth by her half-sister, Samantha Markle.

This comes after Samantha's initial complaint was dismissed by a Florida judge in March, leading her to file an amended lawsuit.

Samantha is seeking $75,000 in damages, claiming that Meghan's statements during her high-profile interview with Oprah Winfrey tarnished Samantha's reputation and undermined the credibility of her book, which detailed their once-close relationship.

The trial date has been firmly scheduled, and it is expected to shed light on the contentious allegations.

To move forward with the trial, a judge has arranged an in-person meeting, as is customary in civil court proceedings.

However, Meghan will not be required to appear in court.

Back in May, the Duchess attempted to have Samantha's renewed lawsuit dismissed, but a ruling from a Tampa court judge is still pending.

Samantha's court claim revolves around Meghan allegedly defaming her during the Oprah interview by stating that she grew up as an only child.

The 59-year-old argues that this statement, combined with Meghan's assertion that she doesn't really know her, constitutes defamation.

Peter Tickton, Samantha's legal representative, expressed confidence that the judge would not dismiss the case, stating, “Once I explained how and why Meghan did what she did to discourage readers from reading Samantha's book, which was titled with the name Princess Pushy in it, the whole case made more sense.”

On the other hand, Michael Klump, the Duchess' representative, dismissed the lawsuit as baseless, asserting that it has always been a lawsuit in search of a viable claim.

He argues that the case fails because it contradicts defamation law and the First Amendment.

The underlying family dynamics between Meghan and Samantha reveal that they share the same father, Thomas, with whom the Duchess also maintains a strained relationship.

Samantha claims that their bond soured when Meghan's acting career took off, alleging that Meghan became hostile after meeting and dating Prince Harry.
