Jill Biden’s Subtle Nod of Support to Meghan Markle: The Lemon Connection
After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, their fans were quick to spot what they believed to be a gesture of support from First Lady Jill Biden.
It all started when Jill wore an Oscar de la Renta dress adorned with a lemon pattern to the State Department's International Women of Courage Awards, the day after the interview aired in 2021.
To complete the look, she even donned a matching face mask, although she removed it before speaking at the event.
Interestingly, Meghan had previously worn a similar dress from the same designer, worth $2,890, a month before.
This caught the attention of Twitter users, who saw Jill's outfit as a subtle nod to Team Sussex, despite the fact that she had worn the dress on multiple occasions prior to this event.
In an exclusive report by DailyMail.com, it was revealed that Meghan Markle sent Jill Biden a basket of lemons as a token of gratitude.
A source close to the First Lady confirmed that she was in on the joke.
However, what actually happened to the lemons after they arrived at the White House remains unclear, as the First Lady's office did not respond to inquiries on the matter.
It is widely believed that Jill, known for her thoughtfulness, would have certainly sent Meghan a thank-you note for the gift.
This gesture could have been Meghan's way of forging a closer bond with Jill, who already shares a good relationship with Prince Harry.
Despite their significant age difference of 33 years, Jill and Harry have developed a connection through their shared interest in veterans' affairs.
As the mother of a veteran herself, Jill's late son, Beau Biden, served in Iraq as part of the Delaware National Guard and initiated the Joining Forces program, which aimed to assist veterans and their families.
Prince Harry, having served in Afghanistan, caught Jill's attention as a voracious reader.
She even read his memoir, “Spare.”
In fact, Jill was scheduled to attend the Warrior Games in Orlando, Florida, in September 2021 with Harry, who had already relocated to California.
The Warrior Games had inspired Harry to establish his Invictus Games after attending them in Colorado in 2013.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, the 2021 Games were transformed into a virtual event.
The friendship between Jill and Harry dates back to May 2013 when they met at a reception for wounded soldiers from the United States and Britain in Washington, D.C. Their immediate connection was evident, as Jill traveled alone to London the following year to support Harry's inaugural Invictus Games.
They were photographed together, beaming during several events.
Joe Biden even jokingly expressed his concern about the amount of time Jill and Harry spent together, a jest that the then-Vice President repeated in 2016 when his wife once again crossed paths with the Prince at the Games in Orlando.
Both Joe and Jill Biden attended the Games in Toronto in 2017, the same year Harry made his first public appearance with Meghan.
It is unclear if the Bidens had the opportunity to meet Meghan during that time.
However, Jill has publicly shown her support for Harry's dedication to helping veterans.
During a visit to the United Kingdom in June 2020 for the G7 Summit, where she had separate meetings with Kate Middleton, then the Duchess of Cambridge, and Queen Elizabeth, Jill praised the Invictus Games established by Prince Harry when she met with British veterans as part of her Joining Forces initiative.
At that point, Harry and Meghan had already stepped down from their royal duties.
Jill expressed her admiration for the Games and another veterans' group supported by Harry, Walking with the Wounded.
