Introducing Prince Louis: The Unexpected Royal Title Change
In a delightful turn of events, the newest addition to the royal family, baby Louis, has captured the hearts of the nation.
Weighing a healthy eight pounds and seven ounces, Prince Louis of Cambridge, as he is now known, was not initially destined to hold such a prestigious title.
However, thanks to the intervention of his great-grandmother, the rules were changed, granting him this honor.
The decision dates back to 1917 when King George V limited the use of HRH titles.
According to his ruling, only the monarch, their children, grandchildren, and the first grandson of the Prince of Wales were entitled to official titles.
Under these old rules, Prince George would have been the only one with a royal title, while his siblings would have had different designations.
For instance, Princess Charlotte might have been known as Lady Charlotte Mountbottom Windsor, and baby Louis as Lord Louis Mountbottom Windsor.
Fortunately, the Queen stepped in just before Prince George's birth, ensuring that her great-grandchild would have suitable titles for a future monarch.
Through a legal procedure called a letters patent, the Queen made a change without parliamentary involvement.
A notice published in the London Gazette on Kate's 31st birthday in 2013 stated that all the children of the Prince of Wales's eldest son would enjoy the style, title, and attribute of Royal Highness, with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess preceding their Christian names or other honorable titles.
Thanks to this alteration, all of Prince William and Kate Middleton's children, including Prince Louis, can carry the title of Prince or Princess.
However, this change also means that any children born to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be referred to as Lord or Lady, rather than Prince or Princess, unless the Queen decides otherwise.
The arrival of Prince Louis has brought joy and excitement to the royal family and the nation as a whole.
His birth not only marks a new chapter in the lives of Prince William and Kate Middleton but also highlights the significance of royal traditions and the role of the monarchy.
