Harry’s Bombshell Memoir Faces A Cold Reception in Montecito
While Omid Scobie's book, Endgame, is making waves internationally, it seems to have barely made a blip in the affluent neighborhood of Montecito.
According to the owner of Montecito's main bookstore, Endgame is not being stocked, and locals, including Katy Perry's father, seem uninterested in the new release.
Mary Sheldon, the manager of Tecolote Bookshop, confirmed that they were not carrying Endgame and had received no requests for it from the community.
“I don't know how everyone else feels about it, but in the bookstore community, they don't seem to care,” said Sheldon, an 80-year-old resident.
She added that Montecito's fame and celebrity presence may be the reason behind the lack of interest.
Speculation has arisen that the Sussexes might be considering a move from their mansion in Montecito.
Michaela Gaston Morgan, a voiceover actor and member of the Santa Barbara Polo and Racket Club, where Prince Harry plays polo, mentioned hearing rumors of their potential relocation to Los Angeles.
“I think they're looking for real estate if they haven't found it already,” Morgan stated.
She expressed her disinterest in reading Endgame and wasn't surprised that others in Montecito shared her apathy.
“We're surrounded by celebrities here,” she explained, adding that she adored the late Queen but was disappointed by Harry and Meghan's behavior since leaving the royal family.
Morgan concluded that if the Sussexes wanted attention, they were in the wrong town.
“You can be anyone and live here; no one's trying to be anything.
It's calm here.
This is a ranching community.”
In the meantime, Harry's book, Spare, is facing its own challenges.
Once a bestseller in January, it has now become a frequent returner.
The bombshell memoir about his life within and outside the royal family has caused even larger rifts between Harry and his family, leaving scars on the general public as well.
It's hard to believe that just a year ago, we were unaware of the floor-grappling between Harry and his brother, Prince William, in Nottingham Cottage.
Or how he used Elizabeth Arden's eight-hour cream to soothe his frostbitten appendage.
And let's not forget his revelation about losing his virginity to an older woman in a pub garden.
However, it seems that shocking anecdotes and entitled musings aren't enough to maintain the book's popularity.
Spare has been identified as the most traded-in biography of 2023 by We Buy Books.
The book reseller reported accepting hundreds of copies of the 416-page memoir, with the potential for even more.
A spokesperson stated, “Prince Harry's Spare was our most traded-in biography of the year.
We've accepted 459 copies.
We limit how many we accept in a time frame, so chances are, if we'd accepted every copy, there'd have been a lot more.”
Initially priced at £28, Spare is currently available for £14 on Amazon and £19.99 at Waterstones.
We Buy Books offers a mere £2.40 for a second-hand copy.
Upon its release, Spare sold an impressive 1.4 million copies on its first day across the UK, US, and Canadian markets, earning it a Guinness World Record for the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever.
It was published in digital, paperback, and hardcover formats, translated into 15 different languages.
For those who wanted a truly immersive experience, there is also a 15-hour audiobook edition narrated by Harry himself.
Criticism has been aimed at Harry for airing his family's dirty laundry, including private conversations with the Queen and his apparent animosity towards his brother.
He was also heavily criticized for revealing that he had taken the lives of 25 men while serving in the British Army in Afghanistan.
