Disgrace: Sussexes’ Jet Travel Banned Over Resident Obligations

In a surprising turn of events, Nesbitt and Montecito County have imposed a ban on the jet travel of and , also known as the Sussexes.

The County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 against granting Nesbitt a permit to land and take off in his helicopter from his lavish $65 million property twice a week.

While Supervisors Peter Adam and Steve Lavagino were in favor of granting the permit, the majority ruled against it.

The hearing, which took place on September 25th, was filled with disgruntled neighbors expressing their concerns.

One of the residents, Nesbitt, addressed the Board of Supervisors, stating that helicopters flying off his property had become a hot topic on the local blog called Nextdoor.

However, he clarified that no helicopters or jets had taken off or landed from his property, except during the one-ninth debris flow when residents needed rescue, and during a noise demonstration for members of cottages at Somerland.

Nesbitt also pointed out that there were other neighbors who landed jets on their properties without permits, yet he was the one facing criticism for it.

He emphasized that the issue was not about helicopters flying over Santa Barbara County, as there are already over 700 helicopters and jets flying through Southern County airspace each month, according to the Santa Barbara Airport Authority.

Residents like Ronnie Mellon, a Montecito local of over 40 years, expressed their concerns about the noise disturbance caused by low-flying jets.

Mellon highlighted the negative impact on the peace and quiet that residents value, including noise pollution, windows rattling, PTSD, pet anxiety, fire and accident risks, environmental concerns, and threats to wildlife.

Many representatives from surrounding neighborhood organizations and homeowner associations, such as the Padaro Lane Association, the Carpintero Valley Association, and the Montecito Association, also voiced their opposition to the permit at the supervisor's hearing, echoing their stance from previous planning committee hearings.

In a recent poll conducted among Montecito residents, it was revealed that and were named as the couple who annoys residents the most.

This backlash has led to speculation that the couple may face restrictions on using private jets and helicopters until a settlement is reached.

The criticism towards the Sussexes intensified due to their advocacy for climate change while reportedly taking 21 private jet flights.

The couple recently attended an event in New York calling for action on climate change, only to use a private jet to return to their $11 million California home.

Former government minister Norman Baker expressed his disappointment, stating that it is hypocritical for Prince Harry or any member of the royal family to lecture people about climate change while emitting more carbon than most individuals on the planet.

Private jet users are among the top 1% of carbon emitters worldwide.

According to the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius, an individual's annual carbon budget should not exceed 2.1 tonnes.

However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly surpassed this limit by nearly 15 times in a single flight.

Royal expert Tom Quinn criticized the couple, highlighting their contradictory behavior of preaching about environmental responsibility while using private jets.

As the controversy continues, it remains to be seen how the Sussexes will respond to the ban on their jet travel and the mounting criticism surrounding their carbon footprint.
