Conservative MP Plans to Strip Duke and Duchess of Sussex of Royal Titles
Conservative MP Bob Seeley has announced his intention to introduce legislation that would remove the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal titles.
This comes shortly after the release of a Netflix documentary featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in which they made allegations against the British Royal family.
Seeley plans to propose a private member's bill next year to amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act.
In the documentary, Harry and Meghan claimed that some members of the Royal family were unkind to women marrying into the monarchy and even made racist remarks.
Seeley, who accused Prince Harry of “monetizing his misery for public consumption,” believes that the couple's actions warrant a downgrade in their royal status.
If passed, the legislation would grant the Privy Council the power to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles.
Seeley's criticism extends to Prince Harry's use of his royal titles while simultaneously criticizing the institution of monarchy and his own family.
The MP had already planned to propose the bill before the controversy surrounding the Netflix documentary emerged.
Meanwhile, Labour MP Rachel Maskell has submitted a separate bill to parliament, which would give the monarch new powers to remove titles or establish a parliamentary committee to determine if a title should be revoked.
Maskell's bill specifically targets the Duke of York's title, reflecting the desire of her constituents.
The calls to boycott Netflix have also grown louder, with Employment Minister Guy Opperman urging the public to focus on more important matters.
Opperman appeared on BBC's Question Time and stated that the series had no significant impact on the Royal family.
He emphasized that he would not be watching the documentary and encouraged others to follow suit.
“I would urge everyone to boycott Netflix and make sure that we actually focus on the things that matter,” Opperman expressed.
Harry and Meghan have previously accused the Royal family of causing their downfall and failing to provide adequate protection.
Their departure from the United Kingdom was accompanied by a wave of controversy and criticism.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how these legislative proposals will progress and what impact they may have on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal status.
