In a moment of jealousy, reportedly exclaimed, “Why not me?”

as gifted Sophie, Countess of Wessex, with a stunning sparkler worth £115,000.

The classic ring holds heartfelt significance, as it is linked to the Queen herself.

Sophie and her husband, , announced their engagement, marking the end of a generation.

The Queen and were overjoyed that their youngest child was ready to tie the knot.

A statement released by the palace at the time expressed their delight, stating, “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are delighted to announce the engagement of their youngest son, , to Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones.

The couple sought the permission of their respective parents between Christmas and the New Year.

Both families are thrilled at the news.”

For Sophie's engagement ring, Prince Edward chose a trilogy diamond design, featuring two heart-shaped stones.

Clare Beetson, the general manager of lab-grown engagement ring brand Nightingale, described the ring as “another design from Royal Jeweller Garrard.”

It consists of a two-carat oval diamond flanked by two heart-cut diamonds, creating a truly stunning piece.

Interestingly, Sophie's engagement ring is valued at £115,000, making it one of the more affordable engagement rings within the royal family.

In comparison, the Queen's engagement ring boasts a large central stone adorned with diamond clusters on either side.

Its romantic background adds to its allure.

, realizing he couldn't afford a suitable engagement ring for Her Majesty, turned to his mother, who generously donated a beautiful three-carat center diamond from her own collection.

With its similar design, Sophie's engagement ring can be seen as a touching tribute to the Queen and Prince Philip.

Now, you might be wondering why Prince Edward holds the title of an earl while his brothers and nephews are all dukes.

Technically, as the son of the monarch, Prince Edward should have been granted a dukedom.

However, he became the first in his position to be titled the Earl of Wessex since the Tudor times.

Contrary to popular belief, this unusual title was not a snub from his mother; it was actually Prince Edward's own request.

Prince Edward met Sophie Rhys-Jones at the Queen's Tennis Club in London, and six years later, on January 6, 1999, they announced their engagement.

Prior to their wedding, it was revealed that they would be styled as the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

This came as a surprise to the public, who expected a more traditional dukedom.

It later emerged that the Queen had offered Prince Edward the dukedom of Cambridge, the current title held by and .

However, he declined this offer for a rather surprising reason.

The earldom of Wessex had not been in use since the 11th century, but according to reports, Prince Edward asked the Queen to bestow upon him the title of Lord Wessex, inspired by a character in his favorite film, “Shakespeare in Love.”

A royal insider explained that Prince Edward simply liked the sound of it and requested the Queen's permission to be named after the fictional Lord Wessex.

When news of this unexpected title broke, it was revealed that the royal family intended for Prince Edward to be created the Duke of Edinburgh upon the death of his father and the accession of his elder brother.

However, recent discussions have cast doubt on whether this will indeed happen.

If the title is bestowed upon them, Sophie would become the Duchess of Edinburgh, a courtesy title that the Queen held from her wedding in 1947 until her accession in 1952.

The Countess of Wessex once shared her surprise when Prince Philip expressed his desire for them to assume the title.

In an interview with the Telegraph, she recalled, “We sat there slightly stunned.

He literally came straight in and said, ‘Right.

I'd like it very much if you would consider that.'”

Currently, the title of Duke of Edinburgh belongs to Prince Charles, as he inherited it upon the death of Prince Philip, being the eldest son.
