Storyteller Meg Schock Reveals Truth Behind Meghan Markle’s Engagement Interview
In a recent interview, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has claimed that her engagement interview with Prince Harry, conducted by BBC journalist Michelle Hussain, was an orchestrated reality show.
However, Hussain has disputed Markle's characterization, stating that her recollection is that she was simply asked to do the interview and then proceeded to conduct it.
Markle made these remarks during one of the first episodes of her new streaming service series.
Describing the interview as rehearsed, she explained that they had gone out with the press, then returned inside, took off their coats, and sat down to do the interview, all in one continuous moment.
This led her to believe that it was a carefully planned and staged event.
The host of Radio 4's Today program, Johnny Diamond, spoke to Michelle Hussain about the interview back in 2017, in light of Markle's recent comments.
Diamond revealed that some people also believed the interview they conducted with Hussain was an orchestrated reality show.
However, he expressed his uncertainty about who might have orchestrated it, jokingly suggesting it could have been “Michelle's evil plan.”
At the time, Diamond found the interview to be charming, portraying two people deeply in love, with Hussain asking them questions.
Later on, Diamond added that the suffocation Markle felt when her relationship with Prince Harry became public was something he believed Prince Harry had experienced throughout his adult life.
Markle herself has spoken about feeling suffocated by the constant media attention and invasion of privacy, even mentioning neighbors renting out their yards to place cameras.
Another journalist, Justin Webb, also commented on Markle's sense of suffocation.
He mentioned watching a bit of the interview and feeling that Markle conveyed a strong sense of suffocation she experienced upon joining the royal family.
In response to Markle's allegations, Michelle Hussain referred to a famous phrase used by Buckingham Palace regarding explosive racism allegations made by Markle during her 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
While acknowledging that recollections may vary, Hussain stated that she distinctly remembers being asked to do the interview and then conducting it.
After her morning radio show, Hussain spoke on record to the BBC, providing further details about the 2017 interview.
She explained that the focus of the entire BBC team present that day was to ensure that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were at the heart of the interview and felt as comfortable as possible.
Hussain emphasized that it was their special day and that she was asked to conduct the interview the night before, with the recording taking place the following afternoon.
The interview itself was conducted discreetly and on a small scale, with only two people from the editorial team present.
Prior to the interview, there was a discussion with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and two members of their team to determine what they were comfortable sharing, as this was their introduction to the world as a couple.
In conclusion, while Meghan Markle has characterized her engagement interview as an orchestrated reality show, journalist Michelle Hussain disputes this claim, stating that she was simply asked to conduct the interview and did so in a manner that focused on showcasing the love and connection between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The differing recollections highlight the complexity of the situation, leaving the public to question who the true orchestrators of the interview were.
