Little did they know that this would be a momentous occasion.

This year, a grand bank holiday weekend celebration will honor the Queen's remarkable 70-year reign during the first weekend of June.

However, it was in February 1952, following the tragic demise of her beloved father, George VI, that she officially ascended to the throne.

On Sunday, February 6, we commemorate the 70th anniversary of his passing.

Yet, today also marks a heart-wrenching anniversary for the Queen, as January 31, 1952, was the last time she saw her father alive before he left this world, leaving her to return to the UK as Queen.

On that cold and blustery day, Princess Elizabeth, as she was known then, along with Prince Philip, stood at London Airport, ready to embark on an extensive royal tour of the Commonwealth.

Present at the airport were the King, the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret, who bid the royal couple farewell as they boarded a plane bound for Nairobi, Kenya.

This farewell not only marked the last time Princess Elizabeth saw her father but also served as the final public appearance of George VI.

Merely days later, he peacefully passed away in his sleep at Sandringham, and Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, assumed the role of monarch.

Prince Philip, while in Kenya, conveyed the profoundly sad news of her father's passing to the Queen.

Despite her grief, Queen Elizabeth immediately focused on the practicalities of her return to England, fully aware of her public responsibilities.

The Royal Party traveled back to London on the Royal Boat Argonaut, making a refueling stop in Libya.

It was during this journey that her staff realized her mourning attire had been mistakenly sent ahead to the next destination on her royal tour.

Upon landing in London, a black dress was swiftly provided for her to change into before she stepped out into the public eye.

In a heartwarming anecdote from the Queen's personal adviser and dresser, Angela Kelly, during a royal tour to Australia in 2006, Ms. Kelly shared a playful moment with Her Majesty.

The Queen expressed her desire to see a kookaburra, a native Australian bird, during her visit.

However, luck was not on her side, and she did not spot one.

Ms. Kelly, having come across a stuffed toy kookaburra at a market in Sydney, decided to have some fun before presenting it to the Queen.

Upon their return to Government House, where they were staying, Ms. Kelly placed the toy in a cage on the balcony outside the Queen's room.

She then informed the monarch that she had spotted a peculiar gray bird through the window.

Curious, the Queen looked outside and exclaimed, “It's a kookaburra!”

Ms. Kelly, pretending to be concerned about the bird flying away, hesitated to open the cage.

Amused, the Queen quickly joined her, urging her not to release it.

Ms. Kelly, trying to keep a straight face, eventually revealed that the kookaburra was, in fact, not alive.
