This narrative suggested that they were finally escaping the constraints of their royal duties and the British media, which they had portrayed as a toxic force in their lives.

But it seems that facts have a way of contradicting a good story.

The events that unfolded in New York this week have only added to the confusion surrounding Meghan and Harry's claims of a near-catastrophic confrontation with the media.

The exact details of what occurred are still unclear, but one thing is certain: Harry's proclamation of freedom in 2020 has proven to be false.

If the chaos that transpired in New York is their idea of freedom, then it is safe to say that they may want to reconsider their definition.

Let's start from the beginning.

On Tuesday night, Meghan, Harry, and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, attended an event where Meghan was being celebrated for her supposed contribution to feminism.

It is still unclear what exactly she has done to earn this title, but it seems that she made some calls to Washington senators advocating for paid parental leave.

She also expressed her support for the Equal Rights Amendment in Vogue magazine.

However, it appears that she has yet to take any concrete action on these issues.

After receiving her award and delivering a speech filled with vague statements, the trio left the venue in a convoy of SUVs.

What happened next depends on who you ask.

Meghan and Harry's spokesperson described it as a near-catastrophic car chase instigated by aggressive paparazzi, lasting over two hours.

However, the New York Police Department referred to it as a “challenging transport situation.”

The city mayor, Eric Adams, expressed skepticism about the two-hour high-speed chase, and the taxi driver who drove them stated that he never felt endangered.

He described the situation as quiet and seemingly scared but ultimately safe, given that it was New York.

Regardless of Meghan and Harry's dramatic account of events, videos on social media clearly show a large group of media surrounding the couple before and after the incident.

This raises an important question: if Harry claimed to feel unsafe in the UK, why did the most frightening incident he has experienced occur thousands of miles away from his home country?

Could it be that their portrayal of the UK as the source of all their problems is an oversimplification of reality?

For some time now, amidst their public criticisms of the royal family and various media appearances, Harry has directed much of his animosity towards the UK media.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, he expressed concerns about history repeating itself, referring to his late mother, Princess Diana, and her tragic death.

However, Harry's narrative took a different turn when he embarked on his “freedom flight” to the US.

He spoke of enjoying walks as a family, going hiking, and even taking his son, Archie, on bike rides—a luxury he claimed he was denied during his own childhood.

Yet, the recent car chase in New York has shattered this heroic narrative.

It raises doubts about Meghan and Harry's claims that all their problems can be traced back to the UK.

If we strip away the hyperbole and Netflix soundbites, their new life does not seem as free as they would like us to believe.

One cannot help but wonder why they chose to move to California if they sought a private and peaceful existence.

Canada, a remote farm in the Midwest, or even a secluded spot in Scotland would have provided a better sanctuary.

They could have lived undisturbed lives, with only occasional paparazzi shots to contend with.

Instead, Meghan and Harry moved to the epicenter of paparazzi culture.

They have been hounded by photographers more frequently in the US than during their time in the UK.

But perhaps this reality does not sell as well as their carefully crafted narrative.

The story they have presented to the world has always revolved around a before and after, their unhappiness in the UK versus the dream life they now lead in the US.

However, the events in New York have shattered this simplistic interpretation.

Looking at the photos of Meghan and Harry during these incidents, one can see the stress and trauma they appear to be experiencing.

Perhaps a quiet ranch in Montana is starting to seem like a more appealing option now.

It is worth noting that Harry's claims of seeking freedom through his “freedom flight” already have historical connotations.

The term was previously used to describe the massive airlift of Cuban refugees to the US between 1965 and 1973.

Similarly, “freedom rides” referred to Northern student activists traveling to the segregated American South in the fight for civil rights.
