Blow: UK Parliament Considers Stripping Sussex’s Royal Titles

A Conservative MP, Bob Sealy, has announced plans to introduce a new legislation aimed at stripping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their royal titles.

Sealy intends to propose the Short Private Members Bill early next year, which seeks to amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act.

If passed, this bill would enable MPs to vote on a resolution that could downgrade Harry and Meghan's royal status.

Sealy's motivation behind this move stems from his concerns regarding the couple's recent actions.

He believes that by publicly criticizing their family and exploiting their personal struggles for profit, they are also attacking important institutions in the country.

However, it is worth noting that bills proposed by individual MPs without government support often struggle to secure the necessary votes to pass through Parliament.

The amendment Sealy plans to introduce is based on the 1917 Act, which previously stripped royal titles from individuals who supported Germany during the First World War.

Interestingly, Sealy had been contemplating this Private Members Bill even before the controversy surrounding the couple's Netflix documentary arose.

Another MP, Rachel Maskell from the Labour Party, already has a bill in progress that aims to grant the monarch new powers to remove titles or establish a parliamentary committee to determine when a title should be revoked.

Maskell has previously stated that her constituents expressed a desire to see the Duke of York's title removed.

In a separate development, Employment Minister Guy Opperman urged people to boycott Netflix during an appearance on BBC's Question Time.

Opperman believes that the streaming platform's content, including the Duke and Duchess' recent series, does not significantly impact the royal family.

He encourages individuals to focus on more important matters instead.

and , despite relinquishing their HRH status when stepping down from royal duties three years ago, have retained their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.

The Queen bestowed these titles upon them on their wedding day, but only Parliament holds the authority to revoke them.

Conservative MP Bob Sealy, representing the Isle of Wight, plans to introduce a bill to remove the couple's titles.

Sealy has previously criticized Harry, accusing him of attacking significant British institutions, exploiting his family's issues for personal gain, and tarnishing their reputation.

Sealy suggests that if Harry does not support the monarchy, he should voluntarily relinquish his titles, and if he refuses, Parliament should act to remove them.

Royal commentator Jonathan Sacerdoti revealed that Sealy intends to draft the bill and expects it to be presented in mid-February.

Sealy's proposal seeks to amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act, similar to how it was used during the First World War to strip the German royal family of their UK titles.

The level of betrayal perceived at that time justified the removal of royal titles, and Sealy believes that and the Duchess of Sussex's actions warrant the same consequences.

As discussions surrounding this issue progress, the public is left to ponder whether they support the potential removal of Prince Harry and 's royal titles.

It is important to remember that while the Queen has the power to bestow such titles, only Parliament can revoke them.
