Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Netflix Deal Sparks Controversy: Are They Exploiting Their Children for Money?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's decision to turn their children into TV superstars as part of their Netflix deal has drawn criticism from a royal biographer.
The couple, who stepped down as working royals and relocated to the US in 2020, announced their intention to become financially independent.
Since then, reports have surfaced about a documentary series that will feature their lives in California, thanks to a multi-million dollar agreement with Netflix.
In an interview with Bella magazine, Duncan Larkham expressed his concerns about the couple's plan to showcase their day-to-day lives, including their children, in exchange for money.
Larkham questioned how a fly-on-the-wall docu-series could exclude Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, and asked if they were being turned into TV superstars simply because Netflix was paying a hefty sum.
He also highlighted the expectations that come with such a deal, suggesting that Netflix would want more than just footage of Prince Harry doing household chores.
Larkham further speculated on the potential revelations that could arise from filming and broadcasting the couple's conversations, emphasizing the contradiction between their fight for privacy and their decision to collaborate with Netflix.
He questioned how a couple so protective of their privacy could open their doors for a docu-series, describing their actions as desperate.
Larkham pointed out that by accepting millions of pounds to provide a full insight into their lives, Meghan and Harry were essentially selling the very thing they claimed to cherish— their privacy.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle's popularity in the United States appears to be declining rapidly.
Niall Gardner, a Washington-based foreign policy expert and royal family enthusiast, stated that her image is plummeting both in the US and the UK.
After relinquishing their roles as working members of the royal family and relocating to Canada and later California, the couple's comments about the monarchy, particularly during their interview with Oprah Winfrey, have faced scrutiny.
Following the tell-all interview, an economist survey conducted by YouGov found that Meghan Markle's net favorability rating dropped from plus 28 to plus 15, while negative ratings of her increased by 10 points to 33%.
Less than half of the respondents had a favorable view of Meghan (48%), while a third (33%) held an unfavorable view.
A more recent YouGov poll conducted in May 2022 revealed a further decline in her popularity, with only 45% of respondents holding a favorable or somewhat favorable view of the Duchess of Sussex.
Nearly half (46%) viewed her unfavorably.
As Meghan and Harry continue to navigate their new lives outside the royal family, their decision to involve their children in their Netflix deal has sparked controversy.
Critics argue that the couple is prioritizing financial gain over their children's privacy, while Meghan's popularity in both the US and the UK continues to wane.
The future of their documentary series remains uncertain, but it seems clear that their choices are not without consequences.
