Prince Harry and Meghan Face Defamation Case as Samantha Markle Seeks Justice
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are set to face questioning in a U.S. defamation case initiated by Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle.
The lawsuit stems from false and harmful statements made by Meghan during her highly publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.
Samantha Markle alleges defamation and injurious falsehood, claiming that Meghan made demonstrably false and malicious statements to a global audience.
In March of last year, Samantha Markle filed a motion accusing Meghan of making defamatory remarks during the interview.
However, Meghan's attempt to halt the depositions in the case was rejected by Florida Judge Charlene Edwards-Honeywell on Tuesday.
Depositions are formal statements of evidence typically conducted outside of court and overseen by an authorized court officer.
According to documents obtained by the PA News Agency, the court found that Samantha Markle failed to demonstrate any exceptional circumstances justifying a stay or prove that not imposing a stay would result in prejudice or an undue burden.
The defendant did not meet the high standard required to delay the discovery process pending the resolution of a dispositive motion.
During their joint interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made several allegations about the British royal family and shared personal insights into their lives.
Samantha Markle's original complaint stated that the interview reached an estimated 50 million viewers across 17 countries.
In her filing, she specifically accused Meghan of defaming her by falsely and maliciously claiming that Samantha Markle was an only child.
The filing further alleged that Meghan utilized the royal family's powerful public relations machinery to spread falsehoods about Samantha Markle and their father, Thomas Markle, on a global scale.
It claimed that Meghan orchestrated a deliberate campaign to tarnish her sister's and father's reputation and credibility, all in an effort to maintain and promote the fabricated narrative of going from rags to royalty.
These depositions are the latest developments following the release of the couple's Netflix series and Prince Harry's memoir last month.
As the legal battle unfolds, it raises questions about the extent to which public figures can be held accountable for their statements and actions.
