Princess Diana’s Former Butler Upset by Prince Harry’s Comments in Memoir
Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's former butler, expressed his disappointment with comments made by Prince Harry in his memoir, “Spare.”
Burrell, who served as Diana's butler from 1987 until her tragic death in 1997, revealed that he felt “intensely annoyed at being referred to as Mummy's butler by the Duke of Sussex.”
In his book, Harry wrote, “Mummy's former butler had penned a tell-all which actually told nothing.
It was merely one man's self-justifying, self-centering version of events.
He was milking her disappearance for money.
It made my blood boil.”
These remarks prompted Burrell to respond, asserting that Harry had never referred to him as the butler.
Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Burrell expressed his upset, stating, “There was something else which annoyed me intensely.
I was really upset, really upset the fact that he referred to me as the butler, Mummy's butler.”
Burrell emphasized that he had always been known as Paul to Harry, and questioned the sudden shift in how he was being addressed.
He also highlighted the differences in their circumstances, noting that while Harry led a privileged life, Burrell had faced hardships in the judicial system and media.
Burrell elaborated, revealing the challenges he faced when he was taken to the High Court, stating, “I nearly lost everything… My book came from a place of needing to provide for my family.”
He then criticized Harry for prioritizing celebrity status over royalty, adding, “I wouldn't worry about the media if he came back here.
I'd worry about the people on the street because they have a say also.”
Burrell acknowledged the privileged life of the monarchy and the royal family, noting that it comes with the responsibility of public service.
He stated, “The price they paid for that is public service.”
Burrell's comments shed light on the contrasting experiences between himself and Harry, highlighting the challenges he faced compared to Harry's more sheltered life.
As we reflect on this news, it is evident that Burrell's disappointment with Harry's remarks stems from feeling misrepresented and dismissed.
The controversy surrounding their differing perspectives highlights the complexities within the royal family and the impact of personal experiences on individual narratives.
