Title: The Future of Archie and Lily’s Royal Titles Hangs in the Balance
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, are proud parents to their children, Archie Harrison and Lilibet Lily Diana.
However, the decision regarding their titles is still up in the air.
According to royal commentator Angela Levin, the couple's children may have to wait until they reach adulthood to decide whether they want to embrace the responsibilities and privileges associated with the royal family.
As of now, Archie and Lily are eligible to receive the titles of Prince and Princess, as well as an HRH title, following their grandfather King Charles' ascension to the throne in September.
However, it remains uncertain whether they will be granted these titles if they continue to use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor as they grow older.
Speculations arise that the Duke of Sussex's upcoming memoir and Meghan and Harry's Netflix docu-series could influence the future monarch's decision regarding the children's titles.
Although the docu-series has not been officially announced by the streaming service, Meghan mentioned it in a recent interview, expressing her confidence in director Liz Garbus to tell their story.
Meanwhile, the memoir, titled “Spare,” is set to be released on January 10th and will be distributed by Penguin Random House.
When asked about the possibility of Archie and Lily receiving titles, Angela Levin admitted uncertainty, stating that it might depend on the contents of the documentary and memoir.
She suggested that if these contain damaging allegations or attacks against the royal family, Prince Charles may decide against granting his grandchildren their titles.
Levin emphasized that it would be inappropriate to bestow titles upon young children who have no understanding of what it means to be part of the British royal family.
Levin further expressed her opinion that it would be more suitable to delay the decision until Archie and Lily turn 18 and become adults.
By then, they would have had the opportunity to learn about royal life and make an informed decision about their future.
This situation is not unprecedented within the royal family.
Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, were also not given titles at birth as per an agreement between their parents and the late monarch.
This allowed them to grow up away from the public eye while still participating in various activities related to their parents' royal duties.
In a 2020 interview, the Countess of Wessex mentioned that they chose not to use HRH titles for their children, as they wanted them to be aware that they would likely have to work for a living.
Lady Louise recently turned 18, but she has not shown any indication of wanting to renounce her royal status.
The issue of titles gained attention when Meghan revealed in a historic interview with Oprah Winfrey that unnamed officials within the royal institution discussed not giving Archie a prince title and withholding security.
Meghan expressed her concern over the denial of a prince title to her son, particularly as he is the first person of color in the family.
She also mentioned that there were conversations about changing the convention for Archie, even before he was born.
The palace responded to the interview by stating that the issues raised would be taken seriously and addressed privately by the family.
However, they did not directly address Meghan's claim regarding the denial of a prince title for Archie.
Meghan referred to King George's 1917 letters patent, which stated that all royal offspring, specifically royal sons and the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, are eligible for prince and princess titles.
Queen Elizabeth II issued a letters patent in 2012, extending the title of prince and princess to all children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, not just their firstborn.
Now, the question remains: Should Archie and Lily be entitled to royal titles?
The answer to this question is still unclear.
