Netflix Cuts Funds as Meghan’s South Africa Project Faces Backlash: A Closer Look

Netflix has reportedly slashed funding for 's new project in South Africa, as the Duchess faces increasing ostracism from the African community.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be in talks with the streaming giant to film a documentary that focuses on their efforts to build houses in the country.

This comes after the couple released their $100 million docuseries, “Harry and Meghan,” with Netflix last December.

Sources suggest that the new project will have a humanitarian focus, with Meghan aiming to raise awareness about safe birthing practices.

According to The Sunday Mirror, , 38, and , 41, will be shown actively participating in the construction of houses in the communities they visit.

The series is expected to follow their return to South Africa, following their royal tour in 2019, during which they engaged with local residents and visited townships around Cape Town, accompanied by their son, .

The cameras will capture their visits to various compounds and document their efforts to share medical education.

A source close to the couple revealed that Meghan is particularly passionate about sharing information on safe childbirth with the women she meets.

The Duchess hopes to shed light on the importance of proper birthing practices and provide valuable insights.

The documentary will serve as a platform for her to educate and empower mothers in South Africa.

However, not everyone is thrilled about Meghan's involvement in the project.

In the past, she has faced criticism for her comments about Africa, referring to a mansion as a housing unit and falsely claiming that citizens celebrated weddings by dancing.

This recent endeavor has reignited negative sentiments, leading to hashtags such as #VoteSecMeghan and #GoAwayMeghan trending on South African Twitter.

The production is said to be a joint effort between Netflix and the couple's Archival Foundation.

However, it is important to note that Netflix's involvement has not been confirmed, as the streaming giant responded with a simple “no” when approached by a reporter seeking clarification.

The skepticism surrounding Netflix's potential investment in the project stems from comparisons with former President Jimmy Carter and his family's Habitat for Humanity endeavors.

Unlike the Carters, who were deeply committed to their humanitarian work, critics argue that the Sussexes may be more focused on photo opportunities and superficial gestures.

They question Meghan's true dedication to substantive issues and point out that numerous organizations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have been actively involved in humanitarian efforts for decades without seeking public attention or preaching.

Critics further argue that Meghan's involvement in the project may be condescending, with her teaching others in a patronizing manner.

They accuse her of exploiting vulnerable communities for personal gain and highlight the lack of consent from the children and parents whose images she shares on her blog.

As discussions between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Netflix continue, the fate of the proposed documentary remains uncertain.
