Parliament and Privy Council Pass New Law to Strip Meghan and Harry’s Titles
In a surprising turn of events, Parliament and the Privy Council are considering a new law that could strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles.
Sources close to the palace have reported that Conservative MP Bob Seeley is proposing a bill that would deny the couple their Duke and Duchess standing.
This move comes amidst a heated controversy surrounding the couple, fueled by their unofficial spokesperson.
Seeley's bill aims to adapt laws originally enacted during the First World War, which were used to strip enemy German nobles of their British titles.
If passed, the bill would force the Commons to consider removing Harry and Meghan's royal titles, leaving them as plain Mr. and Mrs. Sussex.
This comes at a time when the couple is facing mounting pressure to address the explosive claims made by author Omid Scobie.
Speaking about his proposed legislation, Seeley emphasized the need for action due to the use of race to smear the royal family, which he described as “poisonously insidious.”
As a member of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, Seeley believes that discrimination is a damaging insult, leaving a lasting stigma that is difficult to disprove.
He is aiming to have his title's deprivation 1917 amendment bill listed on the Commons Order Paper next week, after receiving clearance from Parliament's table office.
Although Seeley supports the monarchy, he argues that Parliament and the Privy Council should consider a “nuclear option” in response to the ongoing feud between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royal family.
He believes that if the couple no longer wishes to be part of the royal institution, they should not retain their titles and privileges, which hold significant importance in the nation's life.
Sources close to the Sussexes have denied any involvement in the claims made by Omid Scobie in his book.
However, these denials have been met with skepticism by many.
Seeley suggests that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can simply be referred to as Mr. and Mrs., like any other ordinary individuals.
He believes that the severity of the accusations made in Scobie's book justifies this near-unprecedented action.
Seeley further argues that the couple's lack of understanding regarding the constitutional role of the monarchy, coupled with their inclination to monetize and politicize it for their own benefit, should disqualify them from retaining their royal benefits.
He highlights the importance of public service during challenging times such as economic downturns and costly wars, which the couple appears to have no intention of engaging in.
The proposed removal of their titles by Parliament would relieve the pressure on the king to take action.
It would also send a clear signal that the royal family does not endorse or support their behavior.
While politicians typically avoid involvement in royal controversies, the discriminatory claims made against the royal family have garnered widespread condemnation.
Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has praised the dignity of the king and the princess of Wales, dismissing the claims as mere rumors and gossip.
In principle, the potential removal of Harry and Meghan's titles is seen as a positive step.
It reflects the will of the people and serves as a deterrent against any further disruptive actions by the couple.
The royal family seeks to distance themselves from the controversy, and this move would send a strong message in that regard.
