Prince Edward Tipped as Potential New Duke of Edinburgh Following Prince Philip’s Death

Prince Philip, who was bestowed the title of the Duke of Edinburgh upon his marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947, passed away on April 9, 2021.

It was widely expected that the title would be passed down to another member of the royal family.

While it had been understood that the Duke wanted his youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, to inherit the title, the final decision now rests with Prince Charles, the new king.

When Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones tied the knot in 1999, they were granted the titles of the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Buckingham Palace had also announced that Edward would eventually succeed his father as the Duke of Edinburgh, but only after the deaths of both Philip and the Queen.

The Palace made it clear that the present title held by Prince Philip would revert to the crown before being passed on to Edward.

Royal enthusiasts have shown their support for Prince Edward to become the next Duke of Edinburgh, especially after his recent visit to Newcastle, where he expressed gratitude to those who participated in the Queen's funeral last month.

During his visit to the city center, Edward met with several individuals who played a role in the funeral, which took place on September 19 at Westminster Abbey.

Many fans of the royal family are eagerly awaiting the passing of the title to Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II.

Karen Smith, a Twitter user, expressed her hope that the Earl and Countess would be made the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, stating that they had worked tirelessly for the country.

Another user, Jogab, deemed it appropriate for the Dukedom of Edinburgh to be passed along, while Joomz, a third Twitter user, believed that Prince Edward deserved the title due to his strong work ethic, much like his father.

Media reports indicate that Prince Philip had indeed desired for his youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, to inherit the title.

However, the final decision now rests with King Charles III.

It remains to be seen whether Prince Edward will be appointed as the new Duke of Edinburgh.
